In a bold move yesterday, the Martin government acknowledged that Canada will be playing a further role in the search for Taliban and Al Qaeda remnants in Afghanistan.
Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Rick Hillier has confirmed that the JTF-2 squad, also known as the Joint Task Force 2, an elite and secretive team, will be heading into Kandahar, a hotbed of violence. Just last week, an American team was attacked by a suicide bomber in the area the Canadians will be patrolling and clearing.
Afghan officials have warned Canada that Al Qaeda is planning attacks on the soldiers in that area. General Hillier said casualties are a reality of military life, and that “there needs to be an awareness across Canada that we’re in a dangerous business.” In other words, be prepared that some may give all, and don’t desert the cause. When things get rough is not the time to stop our soldiers from completing their objectives, but is the time when we lend them even more support. Let them finish what they go to do.
General Hillier was also quoted with the following: “We’re not the public service of Canada. We’re not just another department. We are the Canadian Forces, and our job is to be able to kill people.”
In another surprising move, the prime minister defended these words, and he should have. It is so amazing to hear someone forget about being careful with what they say and simply state the truth. It is also nice to hear a Canadian official, the prime minister no less, back up what General Hillier said. What a change from all the usual damage control, spin doctoring, and back-pedalling.
As this column has stated in the past, it is not if we are ever hit at home, but when, and it is about time we faced up to the fact. There comes choice at that point. We can stay where we are with our wet fingers in the air trying to figure which way the wind is blowing, or we can do everything in our power to try and prevent it from coming to fruition.
It is about time that we gave our soldiers some real soldiering, and it is about time that we properly equipped them. We have always had the best men on the planet when it comes to soldiering, because we have always had the finest men and women in our forces.
For those of you who will rise up in protest, sit back down, no one wants to hear you. For those who are going to go into hysterics claiming that this will make us more of a target, you are wrong. It is the only move that will have any chance of preventing us from staying one.
I pray that the Lord will watch over the brave men and women who will go to Afghanistan to fight for all of us, even those of you who still don’t get it.
