In a story from the ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ file, it seems that the city council of Oxford, Nova Scotia has had just about enough of the political correctness crowd. In a move sure to stun the elitists who have tried to secularize our nation, the city of Oxford has made Christmas the law.
Now I must state that it seems to me that Christmas has little to do with Christ. It is more about shopping and family time these days. In fact, most people, even non-Christians, now celebrate the season. But in Oxford, people take the holiday quite literally. City council has stood up to tell all that ‘Happy Holidays’ just doesn’t cut it for them. Nope, it’s Christmas or bust. After all, says Deputy Mayor Leonard Allen, the holiday was originally meant to celebrate the birth of Christ, the son of God. He sees the word Christmas disappearing, and he is not going to sit idly by and let it happen, not on his watch.
“I think we live in a free county where we have the right to celebrate things the way they are, and I don’t see the need to change the name to ‘holiday season’ or ‘mid-winter break’ to make it politically correct,” he said. He added that he only wants Christmas to be Christmas, and that other religions are free to celebrate whatever it is that they celebrate.
Members of the Atlantic Jewish Congress feel that the move is most inappropriate. Jon Goldberg, executive director, said Thursday, “I can’t help wondering what is next. Are they going to legislate that everyone has to go to church on Christmas Eve?” This of course is just silly. Nobody intends to force their religious beliefs on anyone. They are simply tired of being told that it is not allowed, and I for one salute them, if only for the fact that they have had enough of the political correctness that seems to be permeating every facet of our culture.
As someone who believes in God, I choose myself how to honour God, and find no threat in declarations of Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, or Merry Christmas. People who object to celebrations of a religious nature are not simply trying to separate church from state, but are blatantly trying to remove any mention of God. I wish that they at least had the integrity and courage to admit such.
